James II was the brother of Charles II and became king on 6th February 1685. He was an unpopular monarch because he tried to force people to follow his Catholic faith. For example, he gave Catholics important positions in the government and the army.
He reigned for only three years before he was forced to abdicate (give up his crown) when he fled to France in the Glorious Revolution of 1688.
He died there on 6th September 1701.
